Based on the thread above, what things do you think staff should define, and what things do you think we should leave in player hands?

Ranks, requirements, history, and some lore (in the form of that history, ceremonies for advancement, etc). I feel this way because these are the things that often change, are inconsistent between guildleaders, or just flat out aren't RPed because people don't know what/how/when to do it. I'd ideally really love a cooperation between players, guild leaders, and staff on this subject to make fleshed out guilds where it's appropriately challenging and rewarding to advance through the ranks, and where each person knows what their position entails and how they affect the guild and others.

I think Leech said it all. Ranks, promotion requirements, history and some lore. I think I also want the general 'duty/role' of the guild defined, so that GLs can get a better sense of what they need to actually make sure their guild is doing to be fulfilling its purpose.

I wrote a duty/mission statement for Court of the sort I think was helpful for me (to serve as an example), though it's changed and evolved:

COURT GUILD MANIFESTO

Mission: To ensure that Lithmore functions smoothly and well by
addressing any and all concerns that affect the Kingdom without falling
under the purview of a single, specific guild.

Example Duties or Activities:
1) Holding Court to address petitions for aid and mediate disputes
2) Putting together events like tournaments, balls, etc. to boost the
game's social scene
3) Calling meetings when large-scale events necessitate a
response across all of the guilds.
4) Generally handling functions that fall between the cracks of
other guilds - keeping up with history, awarding medals to deserving
heroes, maintaining the Memorial Gardens with records, etc.

What Leech said, exactly.

Guilds are too large, too old, too powerful, and their history and ritual should be too steeped in memory to change between the app in leader of the month. While there should be a chance for players to rp corruption or failure (heck, even trying to do the job right, you can honestly fail) the guilds themselves should not be allowed to completely fail/forget their purpose by staff. After all, how can you even define what corruption is, when you don't have a set standard to adhere to in the first place?

Okay. To do this, I think we need to workshop each guild with its members.

What is the order of priority that we need to attack?

Order
Knights
Troubadours
Reeves
Brotherhood
Physicians
Merchants
Court

That's the general I think based upon my experiences in the game.

I would say my order is:

Reeves - unclear promo reqs and frequently changing ranks
Troubadours - bad promo reqs/unclear mission
Brotherhood - unclear mission
Knights - need some thematic stuff clarified
Physicians - I think reasonably solid but I don't recall if promo reqs made it officially in
Court - really needs the mission 100% clarified and some thematic stuff settled, but mostly solid/low-priority due to low in-game importance
Order - important guild but promo reqs are largely solid and mission is clear, IMO
Merchants - they're pretty solid/settled and very straightforward

Pff. The Reeve promotion reqs are clear: just don't die.

Easier said than done.
