I am not sure how feasible it is to fix code wise, but having two different ways of targetting for appraise and buy is just, well, nonsense and another learning curve for new players (and apparently not so new ones) to climb over. And one that can be very expensive for them, especially since we have to way to sell the item back, other than hoping to find a player who will buy it off our hands.
At the very least if the input is "2.axe" it should then reject it as invalid target, not just extract the "2" and purchase that.

This seems like a clear bug. Can you post it in game with the log for Az? He is much more likely to see it there.
