Okay, I have a few questions about this.
Would these degrees be the degrees needed if someone were to try to become gentry? If not, is there a path for that?
You said everyone is welcome, but (this is linked to the first question) the helpfile for Gentry specifically says Hillman and Charali can't become Gentry even through the University system. Does that mean they would be barred from the University totally, or just never given a degree?
Not trying to knock the idea at all, I actually like having guidelines for the University, makes it a lot easier to understand. Just voicing questions that would probably come up at some point.
Oh and Report Cards, definitely need report cards(especially to the people that have wards attending the University.)
The University
Alright. Here is draft 2 of this.
The University will only offer one basic degree, The Diploma in Letters, which is the requirement required to ascend to a gentry position. I will be constructing the specific requirements soon. But, for the most part, they will require more RP-based requirements and will try and avoid the basic lecture idea.
The focus on the Diploma in Letters will be to create a man/woman of letters, a person who has sophistication and knowledge. Though this degree will be general, students can focus their studies to various areas, whether that be theology, fine arts, medicine, military science, law, etc. The requirements for these "majors" will be worked out in conjunction with the various guilds.
Pretty much, the University will not be so much doing the teaching itself but instead acting as a clearinghouse to funnel students towards teachers designated by the guilds in subjects of their concern as well as providing a formal structure to recognize education in the form of a degree.
After whatever the requirements turn out to be, the Dean will proctor an oral exam which will be more like an RPed discussion of what the education the student undertook was and not an SAT or anything.
The Diploma in Letters will be given in various "levels." The basic diploma is given for just completing the requirements and nothing else. Students who show specific mastery of their field and are recommended for it by their appropriate faculty may be designated for the Honors or even the title of Master.
There will also be a Doctorate available to recognize true scholars who write books, hold debates, and more or less show excellence in their fields. The governing institution of the University will be the Convocation of the Doctors of Lithmore and being a Doctor will give the player membership in that body. Doctors will have the right to use University resources more or less at will and can receive some sort of honor. Doctorates will be rare.
While no formal membership requirements will be in place, Charali and Hillmen will be de facto excluded from being students or faculty.
Also, we'll have some fun RP. I'd like to see big and lively debates where things get all unruly. We'll have commencements and academic dress and stuff that, in addition to the gentry-granting power of the degree, makes having a degree cool.
