So I've started this post several times since coming here, only to scrap it as too dorky. Today I fully embrace my dorkiness.
I'd like to build a TI-Legacy soundtrack.
I often loop a song that fits a particular mood for me while I'm roleplaying and I was curious if other people do the same thing. I'd love to hear what you listen to, and see if it doesn't find a place on my playlist. Silly is okay (Disco Inferno, anyone?) but I'm really after pieces that highlight emotion, triumph, melancholy, suspense...all that fun stuff you find in a good story.
When I'm doing churchy stuff on Olivia, I often put on a 10-hour youtube collection of medieval music.
TI: Soundtrack
You already know that I was listening to 'You can leave your hat on' -Tom Jones while having quite a deep confession with you! (so inappropriate)
Honestly it's mostly Mumford and Sons. I think the poetic-ness of it is awesome for creating interesting RP emotes. A lot of it also is about broken hearts, doggardly persueing someone despite their non-interest which is perfect for how Gwenith thinks. "Thistle and weeds", "White plank page", "Winter winds", "Awake my soul", "Broken crown" and when I feel like I'm losing touch of who Gwen was, their version of "The Boxer".
Also Bob Dylan "Simple twist of fate" and "Changing of the guard." I pick changing of the guards for the entire theme of TI for me. And you're all stuck reading the lyrics for it!
Sixteen years
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves
Desperate men, desperate women divided
Spreading their wings 'neath falling leaves.
Fortune calls
I stepped forth from the shadows to the marketplace
Merchants and thieves, hungry for power, my last deal gone down
She's smelling sweet like the meadows where she was born
On midsummer's eve near the tower.
The cold-blooded moon
The captain waits above the celebration
Sending his thoughts to a beloved maid
Whose ebony face is beyond communication
The captain is down but still believing that his love will be repaid.
They shaved her head
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil.
I stumbled to my feet
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending beneath a heart-shaped tattoo
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you.
The palace of mirrors
Where dog soldiers are reflected
The endless road and the wailing of chimes
The empty rooms where her memory is protected
Where the angel's voices whisper to the souls of previous times.
She wakes him up
Forty-eight hours later the sun is breaking
Near broken chains, mountain laurel and rolling rocks
She's begging to know what measures he now will be taking
He's pulling her down and she's clutching on to his long golden locks.
Gentlemen, he said I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning either brace yourself for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards.
Peace will come
With tranquillity and splendor on the wheels of fire
But will bring us no reward when her false idols fall
And cruel death surrenders with it's pale ghost retreating
Between the King and the Queen of Swords.

I listen to My Chemical Romance, or Pierce the Veil when I need Naer to be emoish, depressing, or lonely. That's pretty much the extent of that though, otherwise I just mostly keep it off. I used to listen to music every time I RPed, but recently it's just gotten annoying. Can't RP in a tense scene with music blaring - and tense scenes are my bread and butter.
Player of: Alexander ab Courtland
That's why I enjoy instrumentals, they can fade into the background where they're not distracting me. I can't read and hold a conversation at the same time (as my family will attest - they talk to me when I'm reading and I respond 10 minutes later with "What?").
I listen to gothy crap and a lot of background stuff when I RP. What I like to do is take the music files from RPG games I like, so I have the background music from things like VtM: Bloodlines, Witcher, Oblivion, Morrowind, etc, going. My favorite of all time has to be the VtM: Bloodlines Hollywood background music, or maybe the sewers...
However, sometimes I go for plain songs that don't loop. Here's what's in my playlist, which I'm listening to right now, whilst I RP right now:
Nightmare by Brainbug
Cry Little Sister by Sisters of Mercy
Days Go By by Dirty Vegas
It's No Good by Depeche Mode
Ghost in the Shell by Aphex Twin
Great Milenko by Insane Clown Posse
Hash Pipe by Weezer
Hazy Shade of Winter by The Bangles
Vampyre Erotica by Inkubus Sukkubus
Jedi Master (Techno Remix) - unknown artist
Samurai by Juno Reactor
Game of Thrones Main Title by Ramin Djawadi
Mea Culpa by Enigma
Mitternacht by E Nomine
Numb by U2
Phantom of the Opera by Nightwish
Every You Every Me by Placebo
Silent Lucidity by Queensryche
Resident Evil Main Theme by Marilyn Manson
When Doves Cry - the choir movie remake for Romeo and Juliet of Prince's Song
Sadness '98 by Bravo Hits
Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac
Honey & Wine by LoDuca
Love's Secret Domain by Coil
Sanctus by Angel Sanctuary
Stoned by Dido
Sweet Dreams are Made of This (Sucker Punch Remix) by Emily Browning

The Weeping Song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
What Do I Have to Do by Stabbing Westward
Voodoo by Godsmack
Within You by David Bowie
Let the Spirit Move Me from Xena
... and omg, at least 70% of that is emo-morbid. Odd, I thought I liked happy music like Azarial (boppy anime techo and DDR kinda stuff).

I... actually... soundtrack any major characters that I play, and often listen to the soundtrack while RPing them. Most of the songs on these soundtracks are character-specific, and often quite revealing. Some might be good Ti songs in general, though.
In the Falling Dark - Bruce Cockburn
"Light pours from a million radiant lives
Off of kids and dogs and the hard-shelled husbands and wives
All that glory shining around and we're all caught taking a dive
And all the beasts of the hills around shout, "such a waste!
Don't you know that from the first to the last we're all one in the gift of grace!" "
I also feel like you could go with any version of All Along the Watchtower that you happen to like.
TO go a little more far afield, the theme from Noir (Coppelia no Hitsugi/Coppelia's Coffin) has always made me think of TI.
"Announcing predictions/Of the end of the world/At the doors of neighbors,/Soldiers are pounding.
Thousands of fingers/Are folded/Like wings/And only their prayers ascend.
I can't meet you/I can't meet here/The god that salvaged us."
To go through my list of favorite songs alphabetically...
Crescent Noon by the Carpenters
Dead Angels by VAST has always made me think of witchy things...
Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones
Knights of Cydonia by Muse for all the various revolutionary plots...
Le Pont Mirabeau, Marc Lavoine's version
Lover Lover Lover by Leonard Cohen
Private Investigations by Dire Straits
Seven Devils by Florence and the Machine
Skin to Bone, Linkin Park
Sunday, Bloody Sunday by U2
Twenty Years by Placebo
Us and Them, Pink Floyd
We Do What We're Told, Peter Gabriel
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (I am fond of the Prince tribute version)
Who By Fire, Leonard Cohen
Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd

Open Up by Dispatch is a favourite of mine for Reeve RP.
They were looking for me when I came to
They were looking for me when I came back
Said hey you, you're looking, very suspicious
I said relax man, get off my back
I said relax man, get off my back.
Now I, I, I ain't opposed to seeking justice
But you're going about it all, wrong
The man you're looking for does not exist
He's just a figment of the higher man's tongue.
Chorus:
And they say
Open up, we're coming inside
You can't run, so you may as well hide
We got the place covered from head to toe, head to toe
Open up, we're coming inside
What's it feel like to know you're gonna die
On the other side of the row
On the other side of the row
On the other side of the row
Yeah
So they took me down to the gallows
Woah
And this boy, he say to me
Why do you smile, when the rope's around your neck?
I said I tell you boy when I get back
I said I tell you boy when I get back
I, I, I ain't opposed to seeking justice
But you're going about it all wrong
The man you're looking for does not exist
He's just a figment of the higher man's tongue
He's just a victim of the higher man's tongue.
Chorus
And they say
Open up, we're coming inside
You can't run so you may as well hide
We got the place covered from head to toe, head to toe
Open up, we're coming inside
What's it feel like to know you're gonna die
On the other side of the row
On the other side of the row
On the other side of the... row
Hands above your head
Que te vaya bien
Step out the line and we'll fill you with lead
How are we to know that you are not a liar
Hey
Don't you see we have a job to do
And our job is the law, job is the law
You fit the description of a criminal crosser
Hey
We believe that he is you, and that is your flaw
That is your flaw
That is your flaw
That is your flaw
That is your flaw
That is your flaw...
And they say
Open up, we're coming inside
You can't run so, you may as well hide
