RP in the 3rd Person

I've been fussing around with the emote code recently and noted that most people only use the /<name> of all of the possibilities to try to make an entire emote 'tailored' for long, short, etc, descs. It makes for some amusing (or just flat out wrong) grammar, almost to the point that I personally wonder if there's a point to that extension.

Would it be an improvement to remove the 'you' from the game and have everyone puppet their characters in the 3rd person?

I'm certainly for this change - I only use 3rd person emotes. Having my character name appear instead of "you/your" etc would certainly make the emote echo look much better.

I always try to treat emotes as 3rd person, and also rely exclusively on /<target>. I would be all for this change.

Hmm, with only two replies, I think I might need to turn this into a poll... :)

Personally, I have no problem with removing the 'you'. I'd like to still be able to use the same syntax, but making it all third person geared wouldn't phase/annoy me in the slightest.

I'd keep the /<targeting> and #, etc to indicate objects. I think it's just a headache to write emotes properly with all the perfect grammar from all angles. Also, I think a bit of space from "you" to "Bob" kinda distances the person a bit... though I'm not sure if that's desirable or not.

I vote no simply because I feel it would make things confusing for new players to remove "you" and whatnot.

I'm not sure I understand how/why it'd be confusing. I'm trying to relate to a new player in my head to see the issue, but I don't think I'm doing a good job. Can you clarify what makes it confusing to new players?

The difference I see is between something like this:

INPUT
emote lifts her hands to her mouth and shouts to /Geras, "Hey!"

CURRENT OUTPUT
You lifts her hands to her mouth and shouts to you, "Hey!"

FUTURE OUTPUT
Kinaed lifts her hands to her mouth and shouts to Geras, "Hey!"

@Kinaed

Unless I'm confused, it should already echo "Geras" today. It's only the first "You" in your example that should be affected, right? :)

I'm thinking more in terms of when things are directed at you than otherwise. Like "you feel sick" as opposed to "Geras feels sick."

And if "you feel sick" is retained, "you says hello" should probably be retained over "Geras says hello" even if it is less grammatically correct. IMHO the game should be consistent in how it refers to its players.
