I'm pondering creating a high priest/ess flag for each of the non-Davite religions in the game.
A player can then put their hand up to ICly be the high priest/ess for that religion in game.
Then, I'd like to reward these players somehow based on the % of characters in the pbase who are of their religion, and base the overall religion City Report factor on the relative size of the various religious factions.
What do you think? Good, bad, ugly? Any ideas to take it further or refine it, because "it's okay, but it'd be even more awesome of it worked like..." ...?
High Priests
I like the idea of incentivizing RP of other religions. Some major pros: new RP avenues, a break from the usual mage/Order conflict, and development of themey bits that don't get much screen time. But, I worry about this setup creating another obstacle for an already (in my opinion) beleaguered Davite faith.
OOCly the Order is constantly short staffed which diminishes their presence, however well-populated they are from the NPC perspective. Would the Order leaders be getting a similar perk? Even if they do, I'm still concerned that the novelty of other strongly represented religions will make it more difficult for the only necessary religion to function in RP.
Not only are they likely to attract players because they're newer, shinier avenues of RP, other religions also don't have the same sort of responsibilities as the Order does.

I think actually having a non-life or death contest with other players over something is probably more likely to encourage Order players to play and enjoy themselves without worrying as much about their RP role being primarily about killing people (ie, the hunting mages aspect is all well and good, but it's not really a complete character concept and tends to stigmatize Orderite RP into the distasteful).
I think we have enough people playing heretics (some people don't change their religion, but when you ask them they'd probably confirm their character's religion as Cultist, or POF) that we don't actually need to designate leaders. If it's something that needs to be done, maybe just slap some extra QP on people who run non-Dav Religious plots?
Like a lot of things, it comes down to that argument of not having enough players for the leadership roles we already have. But, contrary, I don't think we have a lack of non-Davite religious stuff going on. It's just really, really low-key. Like probably harder to find out somebody's a Cultist than it is to find out they are a mage.

So this highlights a couple of things to me that I didn't realize:
1) I can't "meet the competition" as it were, which would lead to some very interesting interactions.
2) I thought that the other religions were just as organized.
My two bits on the issue (if anyone cares) are:
1) The Order staff is growing, particularly in the ranks of people that want to/are inquisitors. With that bolstering of ranks, I would expect to see more Order activity in general, not just around investigations but also general churchy stuff like more masses etc.
2) I think that having leaders of the other faith is important. It seems like some, I am thinking about PoF right now, would be just as organized as the Order, if not more so. That being said I am basing that assumption on the help file alone.

My thought on high priests: with the general oppression of the Order of such things, I cannot see the other religions and the Orderite heresies being centralised enough to have a singular high priest. In fact, I would expect to see it in more of a personal 'cell' like structure, with divergent practices based on fractured records and half-taught philosophies, and very much based on the cult of personality and opinion of individuals. One call may worship in a very different way to another.
I wouldn't mind there being some more support in general for playing within the other religious spaces, however, but like it unstructured and loose as it has historically been, which gives more room for personal expression of a given religion.
