Addressed to Lord op Arcenant,

My Lord, I have just returned from Asglen, along with the rest of the party
that departed there. While I am sure that the good Sergeant Taylor has (or
will) submit a report to you about the occurrences there, I shall also give a
short summary; both for redundancies sake, and in case some small detail for
the portion which the Sergeant was not present may prove helpful.

As you know, we were sent to reinforce the forces of Constable ab Hooper.
Unfortunately, upon reaching his camp, we found it massacred, presumably by
the hillmen of the 'Silver Horde'. Over fifty of those in the camp had been
stripped naked and hung from trees after being killed; we did find one
survivor though. A cook named Borir, who told us what happened there.

Upon finding him, we inspected the tracks in the area, discovering that while
the majority of the band that attacked the camp went back north from whence
they came, a dozen broke off and headed west, moving towards the village of
Pausentown. We resolved that the Sergeant would take the survivor back to
Fort Beau, which was a short distance to the east, and alert the garrison
there, while the rest of us would go on to Pausentown. Thankfully, we were
mounted and the Hillmen were on foot, so we were able to beat them to the
village.

We took stock of the situation there, upon meeting with the village elder,
and decided to fortify and defend the town. With volunteers from the
peasants, we numbered nine to the Hillmen's expected twelve, and our
defensive position gave us the advantage. We constructed a barricade around
the village, and hid the women and children in an empty grain silo that also
served as field triage.

Once the hillmen arrived, we were shocked to discover them dressed in the
colors of Asglen. At first, we believed them to be reinforcements from Fort
Beau; but they were on foot, and there was no way that the garrison could
have reached us that quickly. It became obvious when we demanded they
identify themselves that they were hillmen, using stolen garments from the
massacred camp of Constable ab Hooper to pose as friends. Several of us had
ranged weaponry available, and we opened fire on the invaders.

It was a short battle with them trying to break through the barricade. While
there were injuries among everyone but myself, we prevailed, killing half
their number and taking the other six captive after knocking them out in
combat. We left the survivors with the Sergeant when she arrived, and I
presume that she will turn them over to your forces for questioning. Given
that Constable ab Hooper's camp was demolished, there was no more reason for
us to remain, and so we returned to Lithmore shortly after.

One thing of note that I would bring to your attention is when I attempted to
frighten them away; during the melee, when the first of them went down, I
yelled at them in Hillish to run away and live. The response was, and I
quote (while translating it into Lithmorran, of course): 'The waters giveth,
and the waters taketh away.'. I have no idea what this means, but I thought
it unusual enough to bring your attention to it.

At any rate, the village of Pausentown is safe, at least for the moment.
Should there be any other way in which I can be of assistance to the security
of Asglen, please do not hesitate to contact me. No decent man could refuse
to give aid when a rampaging horde is pillaging the countryside and killing
innocents.

Lord Bless,
Andorig ab Nesmith, Epion of Lithmore
Signed this day by my hand, Aprilis 10th, SC 387.

Aprilis 17, SC 387
Fort Beau, Barony of Asglen

Facing the widespread Silver Horde activity in the Barony of Asglen, Lord Norrig op Arcenant is forced to order a levy of the peasantry into the militia. Small hillish raiders party attack left and right and disappear before the baronial chevaliers can arrive, taking lithmorran slaves and killing the rest. To prevent Asglen's famous wheat fields from being too unattended, he invests into recruiting mercenaries from Lithmore City and elsewhere at a significant price. The domain is thus mobilised for a total war.

Meanwhile...
... on some roads, cart convoys are approached by Asglen-uniformed men, who turn out to be raiders in disguise. However, the carts turn out to be secretly filled with hidden baronial soldiers, who counter-ambush the hillmen and drive them off or kill them. Rumor has it that the militia recently gained the information on stolen uniforms from the Pausentown freelancers, and used it to their advantage.

(For screen readers: a map of Asglen in ASCII, showing Fort Beau, the baronial seat of power, on the mid-east. On the west, a north-south stretch of red-colored land is under control of the Silver Horde. Southeast of this, a small green asterisk denotes Pausentown, a small hamlet)

Dear Lord op Arcenant,

We found the following information from our inflitration of the Hordes camp:

1. They have a spy named Gusor in 'the Big City's enclave to the west'. I suspect they might have meant Ford Beau.
2. The chieftan said that Fort Beau is their next target.
3. Clan Sielski is supplying their army, but their seem to be tensions between them so maybe that's a good point to attack them.
4. There was a Daravi there, probably helping to support them and buying the captured people as slaves from them. The whole he is lipping through is near Fort Latago and he seems to have an insider in the Knights there.
5. We know that the chieftan has an old injury at his knee and that he has a brother, who was in the Reeves that is now sought after by the Order. We suspect Jozafat Steenson, who was the chief magistrate under Proconsul le Marama and Justiciar von Rievinkrintz. Especially since Elder Safir remarked that they looked similar to each other.

Lastly there was a gentry woman present by the name of Anne ab Blythe. We couldn't save her and she bid me to relay her words to her husband Erik. If he is found alive then I would like to keep my word on that.

Best Regards,

June 23, SC 387
Barony of Asglen

The Horde advances, mercilessly. Fields burn, citizens flee, and militia rout when not cut down by hillish raiders. The wheat harvest sits unattended. People murmur in taverns, "When will the Lord counter attack?"

Meanwhile...
With the news of a group of operatives passing as slaves in a Silver Horde feast, that included chieftain Luborad, the Asglen forces get into motion. A hillman spy in the village outside Lithmore City is captured before he could flee, and hanged. Many freed slaves are whisked away to safety. There is an intensive search for the daravi slave smuggler 'Hassan'. And finally, Lord Norrig begins directing resources to the defense of Fort Beau.
It is there that the fate of Asglen will be decided upon.

Act III: Fort Beau

Augustus 1, SC 387

With the arrival of several high-profile volunteers and allies to Asglen's capital, the militia is trained and upgraded, while the fort itself undertakes repairs. Within a few weeks the belegueared pitchfork-wielding-peasantry is transformed into a decent fighting force, disciplined and well-equipped.
Now it is time to wait. Now the two great beasts, Baron and Chieftain, circle each other over the burning fields of Asglen. Make no mistake -- when they clash, it will be to the death.

Act IV: The Tribes
Septembris 25, SC 387

Asglen burns.
The end nears. Little by little the forces of Asglen have fallen back. They've ceded territory to the Silver Horde, bidding their time. Villages have been evacuated. Wheat fields have been torched. The Horde has claimed all it could. Like a mindless beast, it gorges on it's spoils, chewing and gulping heedlessly, not minding how stuffed, how heavy and how slow it has become.
Asglen burns.
The baronial militia is ready. They have been trained tightly and armed to the teeth. They are rested, fed, and motivated. To the far west, the hillish thralls under the control of the Silver Horde have rebelled, thanks to a volunteer diplomatic mission. The warband's Chieftain, Luborad, cannot even call his own tribe for aid, for they have denounced him to the bards. The raiders have nowhere to fall back to, winter is coming, and all the available food is in one place: Fort Beau, the barony's capital.
Asglen burns, and it will engulf all those that dared trample it's beloved fields.
