Could age disability kick in a little bet less strongly for us middle aged folks?

Am sad.

I have thought it would make more sense to only affect stats.

Having entered it for the first time on Norr, I can say it's more brutal than I thought.

Time is a cruel mistress who waits for no one.

I do, however, think the age disability serves an important purpose in ensuring that there is no, for lack of a better word, power creep. No matter how tuff'n'buff characters can get, age will eventually slow them down to make way for younger, stronger characters. Cycle of life.

THAT BEING SAID... I do think age disability could be nerfed a little bit. I don't have a character old enough for that, but I've spoken to numerous people who do and they say it really hurts; and not just in the back, if you know what I mean.

Does anyone know how it works right now? Does it step down gradually or is it all or nothing or...?

It gradually steps down. For every year outside of the ideal age range (17-46), stats and combat skills are capped lower. You can see the effective level in brackets for skills, just the same as when you do 'effort' to lower them. I've only experienced it going the other way myself. Prisca started out at 15 and pretty nerfed. Her stats/skills were capped less when she reached 16, then removed when 17. I think that was fine.

But having some familiarity with the combat system, I think the stats penalty is more than enough to show the effects of age without wiping out the skills too. The double whammy of reducing combat skills as well makes combat characters pretty much useless for combat things, even just outside of their prime, and disregards their experience. Age should make you slower and weaker maybe, but not incompetent.

Agreed completely. Anyone object to this? I know we don't want an entrenched class of 10 year old chars, but still... ow.

Well, again this could be a use for my idea of using skills to retain them- but just applied to age-related skill loss, giving a way to keep them with regular practice.

Except that idea (and that thread) doesn't address the idea that people literally don't have the time/interest to spend all their time grinding something they already had to grind once. Especially when we are in a time of lower logins/activity that being how people had to prioritize their time rather than RP would not help.

Then they don't, and become useless as they currently do after turning 40-something. But it would be an option for those who do want to stay fit in their old age.
