Given the recent rash of demonic activity in the city, the Southside
Almshouse has announced it will be operating as a safehouse: anyone and
everyone who can fit inside its walls will be offered succor and
protection.

The news is paired with a second announcement: the Almshouse's anonymous
owner is also offering anyone who can and will fight a steady salary during
the course of the demonic attacks if they will protect Southside in general
and the Almshouse in specific from threats. A standing salary of 50 silver
will be offered, along with 50 silver for every person involved in a
confirmed battle with a demon. This offer extends only to Southside, where
the Reeves and Knights cannot enter.

Interested individuals are told to write the Southside Almshouse (ooc: mail
alias, SAlms).

Siva, Cardinal, by the Grace of the Holy Synod PATRIARCH of the Holy Davite
Faith of Lithmore, extends his greetings and benediction to the beloved
sons and daughters of the Church in Lithmore City in these dark times we
now face.

We have been deeply grieved to have seen the terror and wanton destruction
wrought by the demonic forces unleashed upon us by witches and mages who
have plotted in secret against us and the Queen's Holy Peace. In these
times, we turn to our faith in deep and yearning prayer and put our trust
in the keen sword of the Knights Lithmorran and the Crown.

In light of this, we decree: no Davite shall or shall willfully seek to
inhibit, obstruct, or oppose the actions of the Knights or the Crown or the
agents of the Crown or the Church in their battle against demonic forces,
and neither shall said agents of the Knights, Crown, or Church willfully
seek to abuse, obstruct, or otherwise harm the good will between these
agencies and the people of the realm during this blight of darkness.


To any and all who do so, we declare them HERETICS against our Holy Faith
and impose upon the full penalties thereof.

We further give our blessing to the Crown in all they do to help in this
cause and exhort all our faithful children to dedicate themselves
especially in this time to prayer and in the scarceness of food and
resources, to holy fasting in order to serve their brothers and sisters.

In the wake of increased demonic activity throughout the city, those
with reason to go into Southside have noticed certain changes.

While thugs and thieves still roam the streets, they no longer attack those
they would normally see as a threat - Reeves, Knights, nobility and
gentryfolk. The former have been given berth in order to speed the
elimination of unholy creatures, and the latter have been seen delivering
food and supplies to those hit hardest by the crisis.

Despite the temporary truce, eyes are ever watchful for abuses of trust.

Late at night on Augustus the 18th, a strange pulse of energy traveled
through Lithmore City, seemingly originating from somewhere in Southside.
Those who felt it - most everyone awake at the time - described it as
similar to a wave of pressure and force, tingling but not painful.

On the morning of the 19th, something happened that had not happened in a
month:

The sun actually rose.

It remains to be seen if the city is truly back to normal, but daylight has
at least returned to Lithmore.

Word has come from the Holy Synod that at the nomination of the Cardinal of
Lithmore, Iain Roseren, until now Bishop of Nimrock, has been raised to
Archbishop of the same city, taking jurisdiction over the Davite Church in
the Vavardian territories of Nimrock, Dusollini, and Acrestinosa.

Iain Roseren will be remaining in the City of Lithmore, however, until
further notice.

After the sun's return, many people in Lithmore thought the strange
magical threat which had blighted the city was over. Though bizarre
elemental demons roamed the streets, they were curiously passive until
provoked and more or less reasonably taken care of by the combined forces
of the Knights, Reeves, and various concerned citizens.

This tentative sort of "peace" seems to have shattered with the turning of
Octobris. Reports are coming in all through the city of even more and
weirder ranks of elemental demons, appearing in new places and greater
numbers than before. Clearly, whatever issue plagues Lithmore is still
awaiting a solution...

Word arrives from Endridge that a settlement of Daravi refugees has been
rounded up by the local inquisitors and burned together on a mass pyre.
The head inquisitor preaches over their screams, "The Edessan refugees have
failed to prove themselves as devout converts. Since their arrival, we
have been plunged into these terrible, dangerous times, beset by demons and
engulfed in darkness! By order of His Holiness, Cardinal Siva Nasamari,
all Daravi over the age of 14 who have not proved themselves devout through
admission to the Order or the Knights, are to be cleansed - for the good of
their souls and the safety of our realm!"

Independently, a similar story is reported from Rosewood. One by one each
of the Daravi relocated there is burned to the tune of prayers chanted for
their souls and the tears of their onlooking children.

Another story comes in from a tiny mining town in Gailiech. The local
priest presides over the induction of a dozen new Daravi acolytes, the
entire assortment of Edessan refugees who had been put up there to assist
with the mining.

Murmurs suggest that elsewhere the Edessan refugees are beginning to be
rounded up in preparation for their cleansing, and that orders have been
going out to start their arrests in the capital. A group of Daravi taken
in by the merchants have disappeared in the middle of the night, though it
is unclear if they have fled or met some other fate.

In another turn of ecclesiatical confusion, word has arrived from Vavard
that church bells have ceased to ring in territories in the north
surrounding Nimrock. Specifically, within the territories of Nimrock,
Dusollini, and Acrestinosa, all church services seem to have stopped.
Couples seeking marriage are being turned away at the Church doors, which
are now barred. All masses in even the smallest of towns and hovels have
stopped. Word has it that no confessions are being heard, save for those
of the dying and even that is done in the dead of night and as discreetly
as possible.

All the while, authorities within the affected territories remain silent,
answering no inquiries to the sudden turn of events.

In the wake of everything that is happening, between the Order, the
execution decisions, and the conflicts resulting therefrom, Cardinal Siva
Nasamari has released a statement providing his resignation:

Given everything that has happened as of late, both abroad and in the
Capitol, it is very clear that my presence as the Patriarch is something
that I need to vacate myself from. May the Holy Synod be blessed in
selecting another candidate, and may the Lord bless them as they take their
new office. As for me, I am stepping down immediately.

Ecclesiastical intrigue is in the air. News of the rounding up and
burning of Daravi, interdicts in the distant shores of Vavard, and, most
recently, the resignation of the Kingdom's most recent Cardinal is on the
tongue of every gossip from the tavern wenches and poorest bards to the
socialites of high nobility.

The announcement of the Holy Synod came, then, as little surprise, if only
because of its duty to discuss the matter of a new Patriarch and Cardinal
of Lithmore to replaced the abdicated Siva Nasamari. What is surprising,
however, is the speed of the affair. Hardly had His Holiness' resignation
been posted on the Church doors as it seemed the Synod Fathers and their
various legates have arrived in the city and bells on the crisp morning air
announce the opening mass of the sessions.

It has been several days since the Synod officially convened and little
word has come from the sealed doors of Saint Aelwyn's Cathedral regarding
the election of a Cardinal, but foremost among the candidates speculated
for the position of Cardinal is an old and somewhat familiar name:
Archbishop Iain Roseren, Court Chaplain and a common face about the city,
especially of late in the midst of the demons and month-long nights.

Beyond this business, the Synod has expressed great concern with the
current state of affairs. It is their belief that this must be faced
together in faith and with swiftness. Now is not the time to let devotion
lapse or be loosely adhered, and they call all faithful to gather behind
their new Cardinal in whom they have a great deal of faith. To this
purpose, a rare summons has reportedly been issued, calling nobility, guild
leaders, and other secular notables to sit with a delegation of the
Cardinal's choosing and take counsel for the future.

A decree came around mid morning of Eldes, Octobris (Month 10) 28 from
the desk of Her Holy Honor, the Grand Inquisitor:

In the Sun Cycle of the Lord: 365. Any Daravi who have joined either the
Order or the ranks of the Knights Lithmorran out of fear for their lives,
due to the latest mandate of the former Cardinal Siva Nasamari, may leave
the ranks of either without reprocussions from the church or the knights.
Further, the mandate that the Daravi must profess their faith by the age of
13 or face cleansing at the pyre is hereby suspended, until such time as the
Holy Synod can adress the actions of the former cardinal and judge them
accordingly.

The Grand Inquisitor gave one final statement, "To join out of fear, is not
a true faith, and thus will not be held to their account"


In subject of: Fire and Ruin at the Orphanage - But a New Dawn?

On Octobris 24, a large party of Knights, Reeves, and helpful civilians
arrived at the Orphanage in response to reports it was burning down. The
flame proved to be a strange, illusory thing of magic, and the party
disappeared within.

What happened next is not entirely common knowledge, though rumor speaks of
a great battle with witches and demons. Several hours after they entered
the building, a great shockwave emanated that was felt across the whole
city, and the flames wreathing the Orphanage began to burn with genuine
heat. This shockwave was similar to the one felt months ago when the
Endless Night did at last end, a curious feeling of energy in the wind.

The group emerged largely alive, though with at least one fatality and
several heavily injured individuals, but the Orphanage was not so lucky -
the building was completely destroyed. Thankfully, efforts of the Reeves
and Court had already seen the children removed due to prior demonic
activity in the area, and so no casualties among the orphans have been
reported.

Interestingly, in the wake of the event, demonic sightings on the streets
have been much fewer and further between... Cautious optimism about a
return to normality is rising.

Hopes of recovery were boosted further when, on the 30th of Octobris,
several merchant caravans arrived safely in Lithmore. Protected by
mercenaries hired by the Grand Magnate and the Merchants' Guild, these
caravans dared to risk arrival in the city despite the known danger of the
situation - and, in return, received great profit for their care.

The many goods whose prices were raised by the trials and tribulations of
the Endless Nights are now closer to normal costs again, given this influx
of new goods and materials - and more caravans are expected to come,
encouraged by the mercenaries' protection.

Mid-morning of Circadi, city officials released the newest update on
casualties attributed to the last surge of elemental demons. One Rasim de
Alhazen, former hospital and court physician, was counted among the dead.
Statements from survivors suggest that the late doctor had recently arrived
in the poor quarter to minister health and supplies. An innovator in
modern physic and surgery, de Alhazen authored several books housed in the
Grand Library dedicated to the workings of the human body. The Lauds
tolling of St. Aelwyn's bell on the morning of Circadi will be dedicated
to his memory. He is survived by his elder brother, Asam, a merchant in
Yagrassa. Doctor de Alhazen leaves behind no children.

It has taken some time for recognition of the fact to percolate through
the city into common knowledge, but now the change in the streets is
apparent to all: the strange demons that have stalked Lithmore appear to be
absent, and have been for a couple weeks now.

The full travails of the city don't appear to be over - the Farin Foreign
Quarter remains sunk in deepest shadow - but the streets are safe to
traverse yet again. Rumors suggest that the Knights, Order, and Reeves are
still searching for something in Lithmore or the surrounding environs, but
the details of what might be going on remain shrouded in mystery to
most...

In subject of: Winter is Coming... Or Maybe Already Here?

Winter has come to Lithmore with a vengeance. Snow has been falling
nearly continuously for two weeks at this point - and while at some times
it is heavier than others, enough has fallen to render the streets clogged
and thick in white.

Currently the amount of snow isn't thought to pose a real danger to
survival except among the poorest citizens, but the winter is still
young...

(OOC note: Snowbank items have been placed in various public outdoor rooms.
If you want to play with new throwing, you may use craft_ unskilled
snowball or craft_ unskilled armful in any room with a snowbank to create
snowballs (codewise throwing daggers that do safe damage) and a 'quiver' to
store multiple snowballs in... And engage in an actual coded snowball
fight!)

Brynieve's approval shifts from Neutral to Approved.

Word has quickly passed that the Lady Justiciar, Brynieve de Versin, has
returned to the Capitol after a pilgrimage to the Holy Springs. Over the
past year she's been a steady hand leading the Reeves, and many city and
kingdom officials in and outside the Reeves are relieved to see the
level-headed young noblewoman safely return. Perhaps the troubles with the
demons and other magical travails of Lithmore have sparked it; however,
many are impressed with the piety displayed by the highest Reeve of the
land in both her willingness to be of aid in the demonic trials that have
ravished the city, as well as her recent travels to the springs. It is
said she seems refreshed from her journey and eager to be at work with the
Reeves once again.
